Research done by Humberto Rojas

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet Marco, who lives in Garden Grove and has been a JORNALERO for five years. He came to United States five years ago and left  Guadalajara, Mexico in search of the American Dream. When he first arrived to Orange County his first stop was in San Juan Capistrano. He realized that he needed to find a job and soon move to Garden Grove. One morning his roommate invited him to Home Depot where he told him he would get a job. He told his roommate that he didn’t have papers to work for a company like Home Depot. His roommate said that it wasn’t a job with Home Depot, but as a JORNALERO who waits outside for local people to give them jobs. For one year Marco did many jobs as a JORNALERO, but soon realized that tile was his specialty. He learned how to work tile from his roommate and soon began getting jobs because his work was generally tile. He has done bathrooms, kitchens, and patios for the last four years. The day I interviewed Marco, he said if I would like to see his work and invited me to come visit him during the weekend to one of the job he has been working in a house located in the city of Huntington Beach for the last week. I recorded a video of his work and took pictures. As I was recording I notice that he had a little radio with Mexican music playing. He said music brings positive energy and makes him feel like back at home in Guadalajara.
